Rémy Bélanger de Beauport is musician with multiple sides: having studied classical piano (Université Laval) and double-bass (Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy, McGill University), he has also taught himself guitar, electric bass and basic live electronics. He now focuses on cello (acoustic or amplified), in improvised music contexts. Rémy has a BMus Honors in Composition from McGill University and is now working on a Pure Mathematics degree at UQAM. His interests have also brought him to the Esperanto language, the study of fine arts history, jazz and contemporary music theory and analysis, a college diploma in Arts, orchestration and electro-acoustic music courses. His work as a musician is somewhat similar to his academic history, improvisation is at the forefront, but underneath it goes in all directions: from rock to noise, with space in between for Bach and Strayhorn. His first “official” release as an improviser was as guitar player and singer of KL6 39E (Québec, under the name Elissa Methridge, printed on 25 home-made CDs). His absurd-noise trio of the time, Soda Pop, had also gotten a release on Déluge, Alterflow (Québec, ds-07 compilation), on which he was playing semi acoustic guitar and bass and different noisy objects in a multimedia environment. As a composer, Rémy Bélanger de Beauport has had may works premiered, but it is the energy he gets from the immediacy of free improvised music that inspires him the most. Rémy works as Duo Bélanger: a telepathic improvisation duo for amplified cello and dance (France Bélanger), but often times he is invited to play in other ensembles, mostly in Montréal. One has heard him play with Lori Freedman, DB Boyko, Scott Thompson, Gordon Allen, Pierre-Yves Martel, Thierry Amar, Les Momies de Palerme, Fernando Rocha, etc. This year Rémy will be curator, with Jean Derome and Joane Hétu, of the Mercredimusics concert series at Casa Obscura. He is also cellist improviser for Théâtre Émergence this season, on a play by Marie-Ève Gagnon. His future projects include improvisations with wind turbines and a stay in Berlin over the summer.
