Isaiah Ceccarelli (Chetwynd, British Columbia, Canada, 1978) • residence: Montréal, Québec • composer • performer (drums, percussion) — member of: Quartetski • Steppe
Gifted with a unique and striking touch, drummer Isaiah Ceccarelli is very active in the fields of free improvisation and composition. His debut album lieux-dits, released in 2006 on Ambiances Magnétiques, was saluted as “one of the most original approaches heard in our parts lately” (Marc Chénard, La Scena musicale), and lauded for its “highly personal writing, a rarity in a musical setting such as this one.” (Thierry Lepin, Jazzman Magazine) Ceccarelli is currently involved in several creative projects with Montréal-based musicians: the Steppe Trio (Alexandre Grogg and Clinton Ryder) and Pierre-Yves Martel’s two projects Quartetski does Prokofiev and Quartetski does Satie. He plays regularly with Jean Derome, Michel F. Côté, Lori Freedman, Philippe Lauzier, and Gordon Allen, among others. His Terre rouge terre noire project — for voice and improvisers - gave its first performance in 2008, at the 9th Montréal Jazz Off-Festival. Ceccarelli speaks French, English, Catalan, and un pauc d’occitan. He is an œnophile and a gourmand. The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec has awarded him several grants.
