Isaiah Ceccarelli (Chetwynd, British Columbia, Canada, 1978) • Residence: Montréal, Québec

Composer • Performer (drum set, percussion)

— Member of: QuartetskiSteppe

A resolutely unique and engaging drummer, Isaiah Ceccarelli is active in both improvised music and composition in Montréal. His first album, lieux-dits, released on Ambiances Magnétiques in 2006, was received as « one of the most original approaches to come through our offices in recent times » (Marc Chénard, La Scena musicale ) and « a writing style with rare personality in this musical context » (Thierry Lepin, Jazzman Magazine). Isaiah Ceccarelli is presently implicated in several creative projects with Montréal musicians : the trio Steppe (Alexandre Grogg and Clinton Ryder) and gambist Pierre-Yves Martel's audacious ensemble, Quartetski does Prokofiev and Quartetski does Satie. Isaiah plays often with Jean Derome, Michel F Côté (their duo album Vulgarités was released in December 2008 on Ambiances Magnétiques), Philippe Lauzier, Lori Freedman et Joshua Zubot, but also with Acadian singer Marie-Jo Thério. He writes for his own ensemble Terre rouge terre noire, a group with two singers and a chamber ensemble of improvisers, and performs with Terre rouge pierres blanches : a sister project based in France with members of the ensemble Diabolus in Musica. Isaiah speaks French, English, Catalan and un pauc d'occitan.
