Her work includes concert repertoire, improvised and electroacoustic music, and she frequently collaborates with dance, theatre and visual artists. Over 45 composers have written solo bass clarinet music for her and her work has been recorded on 28 CDs, most recently Bridge (CQB 0909), solo performance as interpreter, improvisor and composer; Plumb with trombonist Scott Thomson (Barnyard Records); 3, trios with Montréal musicians (Ambiances Magnétiques); À un moment donné, solo improvisations (Ambiances Magnétiques) — nominated for Best Recording of Musique Actuelle at the Prix Opus 2003, received critical acclaim and selling-out 1000 copies; Huskless!, live in concert (Artifact Music) — nominated for Most Outstanding Classical Recording at the Prairie Music Award 2000; Thin Air and See Saw as Queen Mab Trio with pianist Marilyn Lerner and violist Ig Henneman (Wig); Dix situations précaires with James Darling, Gabriel Dionne, and Diane Labrosse (Tour de bras); Close as Queen Mab (Spool). In 1998 Lori Freedman received the prestigious Freddie Stone Award for the “demonstration of outstanding leadership, integrity and excellence in the area of contemporary music and jazz” and from the National Jazz Awards she was nominated as Clarinetist of the Year (2003, ’04, and ’06). Since 1981 Freedman has been working with an eclectic mix of musicians including Canadians John Oswald, Ana Sokolovic, Bernard Falaise, Martin Tétreault, Jean Derome, René Lussier, and Diane Labrosse. Internationally some of her favourite collaborations include Toru Takemitsu, Iva Bittova, Helmut Lachenmann, Joëlle Léandre, Mauricio Kagel, Steve Lacy, George Lewis, Frances Marie Uitti, Misha Mengleberg, Evan Parker, Mark Dresser, Suzie Ibarra, Fred Frith, Ab Baars, Joe McPhee, and Barry Guy. In the recent past Freedman was busy with: two collaborations involving electronics with Monique Jean (Montréal) and Giorgio Magnanensi (Vancouver); as composer-in-residence at the Leighton Artist Colony at The Banff Centre for the Arts. Her solo activities have included: the Toronto performance of Échange by Iannis Xenakis (with New Music Concerts’ SoundaXis ’06 Festival); the Paris performance of Kya by Giacinto Scelsi (with the Ensemble 2e2m); her own compositions for bass clarinet Brief Candles and Xolf in Zagreb, Bucharest, Vienna, Budapest, Vancouver, Rotterdam, Toronto, and Guelph; the concert production Dehors en dedans/There, in here featuring works written for her, by her and by Canadian composers Ana Sokolovic, Bradshaw Pack, Monique Jean, André Ristic, Jacquie Leggatt, and Jean Derome; solo improvisation performances at the World Bass Clarinet Conference (Rotterdam), the International Clarinetfest (Vancouver), and the international jazz festivals in Guelph, Vancouver and Montréal. Recent and ongoing ensemble highlights: Transmission (SoundaXis ’08 Festival); Queen Mab Trio’s Lines of Descent (30-city Europe / North America tour); in duet with Frances Marie Uitti (La Tourette ’07, SoundaXis ’08 Festival); the Joëlle Léandre Quintet (France tour ’07). Resulting from a 4-month residency in Paris where she was developing a new concert repertoire, Freedman’s current activities include: Brief Candles; a new solo recording project with works from her new repertoire and improvisations; a solo concert celebrating her work integrating written and improvised music at the Festival of Extraordinary Performers Solus (Vancouver), and at Stanford University (California); solo and ensemble music at the Centre culturel de rencontre du Couvent de La Tourette (France) with French musicians Françoise Rivalland (percussion), Benny Sluchin (trombone) and Asian musicians Rohan de Saram (cello) and Rajesh Mehta (trumpet / electronics); the 2009-10 concert season of the new, conductorless contemporary music sextet Transmission (Montréal); and Solor, a first solo DVD showing her work as interpreter and improviser of contemporary music for a 2011 release on Mode Records.
