Hurray! L’OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal is about to start! From June 13-21, 2008 thirty shows and more than a hundred musicians will occupy the stages of Pub Saint-Ciboire, Lion d’Or, Dièse onze, and La Sala Rossa. Amongst guest artists: Gordon Allen, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Normand Guilbeault, Philippe Lauzier, Pierre-Yves Martel, Miles Perkin, and Marianne Trudel… To wit: the DAME et Ambiances Magnétiques improvisent night will take place on June 18 at Lion d’Or. Moreover, this 9th edition will open with a concert of the well-liked Fanfare Pourpour this Friday again at Lion d’Or.

Spin with Joane Hétu!

Joane Hétu

Joane Hétu will present her Filature project in which she mixes rock, minimalist music, improvisations with visual and scenic components. This lively artist will be on stage with the Ensemble SuperMusique (Mélanie Auclair, Guido Del Fabbro, Jean Derome, Claire Gignac, Normand Guilbeault, Diane Labrosse, Danielle Palardy Roger, Pierre Tanguay, Némo Venba), and visual artist Pierre Hébert. This concert will be presented on May 21, 2007 at cinéma Laurier in Victoriaville as part of the Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville (23 concerts of “musique actuelle” - detailed schedule on their website). Until then, you may want to go by a virtual roundabout way and listen to some online audio clips of her album Nouvelle musique d’hiver.

Filature, Hétu’s Sound Theatre Premieres in Montréal

Saxophonist/vocalist Joane Hétu’s latest work — Filature, a “sound theatre” in three acts — will be presented at Usine C (Montréal) on March 16, 17, and 18, 2006. Filature is a musical allegory on the materials weavers use: warp, weft and pattern. Hétu unveils creative fabrics of sound and visuals, where music, dance, video art and lighting intertwine.

Filature will be interpreted by the Ensemble SuperMusique (Joane Hétu, musical direction, saxophone alto, vocals; Mélanie Auclair, cello; Guido Del Fabbro, violin, electronics; Jean Derome, saxophones, flutes, vocals; Claire Gignac, saxophones, flutes, vocals; Normand Guilbeault, double bass; Diane Labrosse, digital sampler, vocals; Danielle Palardy Roger, percussions; Pierre Tanguay, percussions, vocals; Némo Venba, trumpet).

Riel in Sound and Sight (and on Sale)

Inspired by Normand Guilbeault’s Riel, Plaidoyer musical / Musical Plea, filmmaker Sylvie van Brabant has directed the documentary Sur les traces de Riel. Normand Guilbeault and Rose Fleury (a 75-year old Metis) travel to Batoche in Saskatchewan in swearch of the genuine history of a people and of Louis Riel. A true “Road Movie” orchestrated around Guilbeault’s music whith concert excerpts and interviews. The further celebrate these productions both film (VHS) and the 2CD set have their price reduced by 15%.

Many DAME musician will be peforming this summer. First, the Fanfare Pourpour will take part in Saint-Fortunat’s incredible music festival, June 21 and 22. Then, at the Festival international de jazz de Montréal, L’Orkestre des pas perdus will play outside from July 3 to 7. Also playing during the festival at the museum of contemporary arts, Les Projectionnistes July 3 and world renowned guitar player René Lussier July 6. This edition of Montréal’s Off-Jazz Festival also proposes plenty of DAME-related shows. Jean Derome will play at Lion d’Or June 27, July 3 and 5. Pierre St-Jak June 27. Rouge ciel June 29. Normand Guilbeault with an hommage to Mingus July 1. Martin Tétreault and Pierre Cartier July 3. Lee Pui Ming in duo with Joane Hétu aith also the Derome-Guilbeault-Tanguay trio July 5.
