Derek Bailey died on December 25, 2005 in London (UK) at the age of 75. Founder of the Incus record label, Bailey helped shape improvised music with his idiosyncratic guitar playing and his passionate defense of free improv. In 2003, he collaborated with young guitar player Antoine Berthiaume on the CD Soshin.
Two of Ambiances Magnétiques’ 2004 discographic productions are nominated at the 8th prix Opus: Soshin by Antoine Berthiaume in the category “Album of the Year — electroacoustic and actuelle music” and 10 compositions by the Trio Derome Guilbeault Tanguay in the category “Album of the Year — Jazz and World Music.”
Conversations with two masters of modern guitar. Soshin is both an exploration of the full range of guitar and improvisation but also a pilgrimage towards two innovators (Derek Bailey and Fred Frith), in the course of which young guitarist Antoine Berthiaume uncovers his many assets.
