Édifices (naturels) takes its title from the beautiful and strange rock formations viewed at Bryce Canyon. The piece falls into two parts: the first is highly energetic, the second more serene. The musical «formations» evolve gradually, naturally, with occasional surprises.
Danses et interludes (2003) are linked in a non linear sequence of 6 dances and 3 interludes. The piece is inspired by Balkan traditional dances and other imaginary dances. The rhythms come from the Serbian language. I recall watching women dancing silently (without music) and hearing the sounds of their necklaces made of numerous minuscule metal plates.
The Contredanse du silène Badouny is literally a dance of two hands. It is based entirely on a micro motif of seven sixteenth notes shared between both hands, a building game assembling mini-blocks that are all similar but all different, too, like puns and word games.
Finnegans Quarks Revival is a work for solo piano that is almost, but not entirely, unlike certain fascinating tenets of quantum theory I have freely interpreted for my musical purposes. For example quantum mechanics has shown that there is a basic internconnectedness among all phenomena. Interpreted artistically, this notion about the nature of reality can allow for a certain amount of freedom in searching for ways to relate ideas. The individual movements are named after the whimsical names of the quarks that inspired them.
