Nisenson’s Upcoming Concerts

Damian Nisenson

On August 14, 2008 Damian Nisenson will be in concert with the Ensemble Fleur de Lys as part of the Concerts de la cité’s Jeudis et vendredis Jazz 5 à 7 at the Amphithéâtre du Carré-Strathcona in Sherbrooke. That same day they will be at Bar Loubards (9 pm). Moreover, Nisenson will play during the Toronto Ashkenaz Festival with Israeli singer Daddo: on August 31, they will be at Free Times Café; on September 1st, at Harbourfront Centre’s Toronto Star Stage.

Bertrand Denzler at Jazz à Mulhouse festival, France

Bertrand Denzler

Bertrand Denzler will give an improvisation workshop as part of the Jazz à Mulhouse festival at the Conservatoire de Mulhouse (France) from August 25 to 29, 2008. He will also play in concert with Hubbub on August 28; and with the saxophone quartet Propagations on August 30.

DAME Now Distributes Rude Awakening

DAME now distributes the French label Rude Awakening founded in 2003. The collaboration between this young label and Ambiances Magnétiques is “natural” since both entities have many similarities. Rude Awakening brings together 20 musicians essentially from Montpellier, but also from Paris, Toulouse, Copenhagen (Denmark), and Chicago (USA), and their catalogue includes projects in contemporary jazz music and electro-jazz, jazzcore, improvised music and indietronica. Happy discovery!

The new album En concert by Damian Nisenson Trio +3 is the 8th release from Malasartes musique label, starring Damian Nisenson playing saxophones, Jean Félix Mailloux, doublebass, Pierre Tanguay, drums, Ziya Tabassian, percussion, Luzio Altobelli, accordion, and Denis Plante, bandoneon, during a concert recorded in Montréal in December 2007.

News from Ganesh Anandan

Ganesh Anandan

After several solo concerts, residencies and collaborations in Italy, Austria, Czech Republic and Germany, percussionist, improviser, instrument builder Ganesh Anandan is back in Montréal until mid-June. He is presently mixing a CD he did in Wuppertal (Germany) with daxophonist Hans Reichel. The CD entitled Self Made focuses on two instruments builders and their respective instrument, namely the Daxophone and Shruti Stick. Afterwards, Ganesh Anandan will return to Prague, his home base in Europe for the summer, with concerts and collaborations in various places.

  • Virtual Bone: solos, duos, and trios featuring his trombone-sampler exploring alongside “altists” Jean Derome, John Oswald & Richard Underhill plus Pierre Tanguay’s rhythmic garniture;
  • Tectonic Shift: Tom Walsh’s “Lyric Trio” based in Europe (with drummer Balázs Elemér & bass virtuoso Sandai Mátyás) recorded live at the closing show of the 2006 Budapest Fall Festival. Featuring Richard Underhill.

Moreover, Tom Walsh is in pre-production of a vocal-based release of his lyric songs featuring prominent vocalists from around the world.

The French magazine Revue & Corrigée (#76, June 2008) has published an impelling article Pourquoi faites-vous des disques? (“Why do you make CDs?”). Jérôme Noetinger, remembering the 1987 Libération special issue asking “Why do you make films?” and the answer by Jean-Luc Godard (“I make movies to avoid the why question”), has decided to ask "the why question" to about 40 artists and producers, among whom: Jean-François Denis, Bertrand Denzler, Bernard Fort, Lionel Marchetti, Martin Tétreault, Carole Rieussec, Joëlle Léandre

Robert Marcel Lepage: Film and TV Music

Robert Marcel Lepage

Robert Marcel Lepage has composed the music for two documentary full-length films: PARIS1919 and The Art of Documentary. Three tv projects with France are also on their way. Furthermore, Lepage is two-time Gémeaux Prize nominee, this year: his film musics of Nestor et les oubliés by Benoit Pilon (music performed by Luzio Altobelli, Jean-Félix Mailloux, Yanik Cloutier, and Isaiah Ceccarelli); and Chez Schwartz’s by Gary Beitel (with Normand Guilbeault, Maxime Séguin, Claude Lavergne, Yanik Cloutier, and Sean Craig) have been selected.
