Une théorie des ensembles, a convivial need, a legitimate happening.
Essentially, there are two reasons behind this new production: the release of a compact disc
recorded live (a first for Ambiances Magnétiques), and the release of a record featuring
all the members of Ambiances Magnétiques and their associates. The result: 75 minutes of
music; 5 groups: Bruire, La Flore Laurentienne, les Granules, Justine and Locomotive; 15
musicians; and 17 previously unreleased tracks recorded live in February 1992 at the Maison de
la Culture Frontenac in Montréal. A thorough delight.

Malcolm Goldstein and Rainer Wiens already have an entry in Ambiances
Magnétiques’ catalog with the album Chants cachés. On this new release,
Speaking in Tongues, Ganesh Anandan joins them for a trio that is truly one of a kind. These
musicians combine very different backgrounds, from South Indian percussion to jazz and
contemporary music. They lock into a lively conversation rich in emotions. Ganesh, Malcolm and
Rainer share a musical culture and aesthetic that is based on a love of the raw material of
music: sound. They share a culture that respects traditions but acknowledges that each artist
has a responsibility to create music that reflects the present-the here and now. It is a
culture that respects disciplined practice so that they can follow music to areas of exuberant
excess if that’s where it leads them. It is a culture that insists they speak with their
own voice-the sum total of what they’ve lived, loved and heard. A culture that insists on
ego serving music and not vice versa.

Shruti is a Sanskrit word to denote pitch and interval. A word that also means
‘that which is heard’ and the smallest intervals of pitch or the spaces between
notes. The Indian gamut currently has 22 shrutis in an octave. Ganesh Anandan and John Gzowski
are two musicians from different musical backgrounds with a common passion for original
tunings. They met in 1996 when John invited Ganesh to play in his microtonal Critical Band at
The Music Gallery in Toronto, Canada. John works with an array of self designed micro-tonal
guitars and stringed instruments while Ganesh has been working with self built melodic
percussion and string instruments based on the Indian Shruti system. In 2006, Ganesh proposed a
series of structured improvisations using “original tunings” from India, Indonesia
and Contemporary composers. Some specific instruments and scales were chosen: John Gzowski
plays a recreation of Harry Partch’s adapted guitar, a ukelin and other self designed
instruments including a 19-tone equal temperament guitar and the electric dowel. Ganesh plays a
self designed 12 stringed instrument called shruti stick which is struck, bowed and played with
fingers. He also plays two sets of tuned metallophones, kanjira, moorching and does
vocalizations inspired by the sounds of certain Indian languages. Both musicians understand
improvisation in the context of “Indian and Western musical styles”. And using
these unique instruments their music moves organically from an “Indian melody with its
gamaka” to a “western style improvised music”. Each piece has surprises with
a rich variety of tunings, textures and rhythms played on instruments seldom
heard.

Following Taxonomy and Gianni Lenoci, Dame continues it exploration of new Italian
music with the release of the album of Antenata. This group approaches songwriting, chamber
rock, sound poetry and electroacoustic improvisation from an oblique perspective.
Interferences. Lyrics inspired by the experiences of contemporary female poets. Definitely a
document of the late-’90s Italian new music current. The group evolved from a meeting
between Sabina Meyer and Daniela Cattivelli. Their original intention was to give musical life
to the poems of a few female poets who have led unusual lives: Ingeborg Bachmann, Patrizia
Cavalli, Marina Cvetaeva, Meret Oppenheim, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Patrizia Valduga and
Simone Weil. This music cannot be confined to a single genre; its influences crisscross between
progressive rock, contemporary music, jazz, improvisation, and electronic music. The project
started out as a duo but soon grew to a sextet and included musicians who, in the early
’90s, were actively involved in drawing international attention to the Italian
non-academic experimental music scene. The group was formed in Bologna, one of the most dynamic
centers in this field. And so Antenata brings together various musicians influenced by the
creative activity that is typical to Bologna and exemplified by Laboratorio Musica Immagine,
Fastilio, Dire Gelt. The rare exchanges between the music scenes of Bologna and Rome is
represented in Fabrizio Spera (Ossatura, Blast) and Aleksandar Zaric (Cirko della Primavera), a
Serbian musician who has been active in Rome for a while.

Audio: “It looped back into itself and constantly mutated.” —W
Gibson Atlas Epileptic represents for Pierre-André Arcand a new cycle in the continuity of
what is called audio art, sound poetry, music, non-music, acoustic, electronic, digital. He
brings in the voice, the Resonant book, some other found or invented instruments, processed by
multi-effects and the digital Macchina ricordi [MRN], a visual and sonic evolution generator.
It is used in live performance to sample and structure the sounds produced on the spot. The MRN
can also process audio files, fixed sounds. And so were produced The gene of speech and Atlas
epileptic. Samples were taken in his previous works. Metamusic. Finally, Portuaire, an older
piece made with the analogical MR finds its place in the tonality of the final triptych.
“The linearity. To withdraw from it would be illusory. Here it fights simultaneity
introduced by repetition and accumulation. A lancinance in the ceaseless recall of the sonic
elements.” — Éliane Saint-Arnaud Video: liquid crystals interpretors. Clips,
animation and installations. “The texture of liquid crystal display reminds more of a
painting than of a photography.” — Sturgis Working with low resolution video, as on
this VCD, one is necessarily confronted with a stronger presence of the pixels which the
compression stresses. The vagueness, the granular, the textures, the structure in checkerboard
are then taken into account. The light and noises of the video image become object of
investigation. Besides, filming directly the LCD screen or the cathode ray tube helps to switch
to the abstract. Moultécrans (N-Square screen) and Framexhibition are new examples of this
evolution. Otherwise, the content of clips refer to Eros and Thanatos, to a heterogeneous
blisfulness. The image and the sound remain independent in their conception and are joined in
the end on the basis of a general relationship of tone or atmosphere. Sometimes the image
anticipates the sound, sometimes the sound anticipates the image. This first publication on
Ambiances Magnétiques, while being an object in itself, offers several faces of PA Arcand:
the sonosaurus, the singer, the performer, the DJ, the visual poet and installer.

the energies of anarchist, pacifist, and feminist resistance and pleasure. Everything is for

imaginary libertarian and those of a little science fiction about totalitarian reality: a

Driven by energy and a certain innocence, Mélanie Auclair meets inspired and
inspiring musicians: Guy Thouin, Bernard Falaise, Charles Papasoff and Joane Hétu, among
others. A collection of immediate meetings ruled by freely emotive and textural music in an
atmosphere of understanding and flexibility. A surprising debut album! “Puce à
l’oreille is born out of an urge to create, to meet, to learn. After a number of creative
experiences for theatre and dance, I wanted to push my experiments further by placing myself in
the service of music, instead of placing the music in the service of another medium. I wanted
to throw myself into it, to expose myself, to make the music that would present itself to me,
while seizing the moment - a way of interpreting the instant. I wanted to be surrounded by
people who have been inspiring me for a long time, people I admire for their approach, their
playing, their strength in making their music uncompromisingly. I wanted to play with these
people, to share a moment with them. These people I invited have all been extremely generous.
This album has been conceived without any expectations, without even the thought that these
experiments could lead to an album, my sole desire being to spend time with these people, to
get to know them through the music and to get to know music through them. I was also very
interested in the idea of playing music with people I didn’t know, our first human
contact being established through music. The studio session unfolded just like that, with its
load of feelings and surprises - like life itself. And that’s how, for a moment, I came
into musical contact with these people. Each one of them gave me a bug… And I’ll do
the same to you…” -Mélanie Auclair

“To interpret a place, to inhabit a space…Décor sonore is the
meeting of music with the sounds that fill our daily lives.A sonic window that opens on a
place, a moment. It’s a collection of short stories as true-to-life as they are
fantastic. This is a time to listen to the sounds that have slipped into the background of our
lives.”—Mélanie Auclair “Although it accompanies our daily lives, noise
is often ignored and underestimated. It should be listened to with the eyes. There can be no
noise without movement, no movement without noise. With each heartbeat, each breath, life
imposes its rythm like a city that imposes its symphony of noise. One that keeps our senses on
edge. What is all this if not a constantly changing sonic landscape? The moment can last
4'33"… Often the banal sketches are drawn without leaving a mark, but sometimes the
grandest of works can change our ideas forever. You only need close your eyes to see.”

home with Neil Smolar and Benoît Charest, in Toronto with Lorne Lofsky and in New York
with Mordy Ferber, saxophonist Dave Binney and pianist Charlie Banacos. He is pursuing a
Masters degree in contemporary composition at the Université de Montréal, under the
supervision of Denis Gougeon. On his first disc, “Soshin,” on Ambiances
Magnétiques, Antoine Berthiaume’s duos with Fred Frith and Derek Bailey continue his
exploration of the full range of improvisation and the thousand-and-one facets of the guitar. A
first meeting with Bailey, in London in February 2001, opened the doors to a new conception of
improvisation and allowed him to discover a musical scene that was incredibly diverse and open.
During a second trip to London, in August 2001, he recorded with Bailey and appeared in a solo
performance at an Instant Music Meeting show organised by Paul Hood through the London
Musicians’ Collective. Eight months later, Bailey and Berthiaume would release their
session concurrently: part of it on Bailey’s compilation, “Visitors Book,”
(on Incus, a label Bailey and Evan Parker founded in 1970), and part on “Soshin”
(on the Ambiances Magnétiques label). Then it was back to Montréal, where a visit by
Frith was the occasion for a recording session with Bernard Grenon at Studio 270. By turns
bruitiste and traditional, Soshin is a meeting of the masters, a pilgrimage to the abode of the
reinventors of improvisation in which Berthiaume is imbued with the presence of two great
guitarists.

Fall 2005: While on a tour of France, Marie-Soleil Bélanger (who compulsively
loves water) and Normand Guilbeault (a salt fan) had the chance to visit Guérande
(Britanny) and its salt marsh. The two musicians were presented with a strange landscape cut
into tanks, like the squares of a quilt, with small white mounds of salt scattered all around.
The whole thing is set on a horizontal surface that is stretched and diced. Salt is an
essential element of mankind's life. Early on, this vital product was exploited and
commercialized on a large scale. Although the first salt-marsh were most likely built by the
monks of the St. Michel's Abbey in the 12th century, the salt industry really took off only
during the 15th century. Nowadays, salt producers (or salt-makers) are applying age-old
techniques, since the operation of a salt-marsh has remained almost unchanged since the Middle
Ages. Tucked between sea and land, salt-marshes form a privileged natural environment home to a
fertile though fragile ecosystem. This environment is very rich and hosts a large number of
unique bird and plant species. By making sure that the water in the tanks is renewed and by
maintaining water levels in the marsh, the salt-maker preserves this natural habitat. As for
water, it has already become a global political issue: drinking water, water for cultures,
water of industrial use. Water is now a highly coveted resource, generating numerous debates
about its distribution and sharing. Right now, 1 billion people on the planet do not have
access to drinking water. We often hear of water wars and water management. Will water really
become an issue in the conflicts of the 21st century? The current crisis is about more than
rarity. It also covers the distribution, allocation and choices made regarding water. Salt
brings thirst and water needs salt for the human body to absorb it. Salt water is undrinkable,
but we can extract salt out of it. These two complimentary elements inspired the Les salines
project, for which musicians Guilbeault and Bélanger wrote 14 pieces. This music work sees
the infinitely small brush elbows with the infinitely large. Impressionistic music evoking wide
flat landscapes. At times fragile, at times strong, Les salines brings to mind tiny crystals of
salt and salt-marshes, but also the sea and the various incarnations of water. A successful
marriage between composition and improvisation, noise and lyricism, discipline and
freedom.

Sound waves for the end of times… Listening to this last opus of
experimental music, one cannot stop thinking of Iannis Xenakis’s La Légende
d’Eer. Eer dies, visits the dregs, and comes back to life. Berthiaume and Sharp follow a
similar path, through the transubstantiation of their guitars into sonic implements. The
growing intensity emanating from Xenakis’s composition is reflected, 30 years later, in
these 11 rather reverential improvisations. BASE is constructed, deconstructed, then
reconstructed into a wall of sounds ranging from the awakening through to experimentation, then
toward a final concerto, a kind of syncopated scream from the instruments. Hell is definitely
worth worrying about. Let’s be good and lend an ear. —Serge Abiaad

The young guitarist Antoine Berthiaume, who released in 2002 an album of duets
with Fred Frith and Derek Bailey titled Soshin, unveils his second effort for Ambiances
Magnétiques, Leaves and Snows, a project also featuring pianist Quentin Sirjacq and sound
engineer Norman Teale. This meeting of fresh talents has given birth to a brilliant, highly
open, poetry-filled collaboration. Certain meetings give such good results that one wonders if
something more than luck was at play. In the wonderful setting of Mills College, California,
Quentin Sirjacq and Antoine Berthiaume are both in Joëlle Léandre’s
improvisation class. They are both native French speakers, they both lead a jazz group and they
share a taste for adventure — enough common points to spark the beginning of a great
collaboration. Piano and guitar: a rather unusual, often eschewed pairing that delivers at
their fingertips a ground for new explorations; a license to discover new sounds and try out
new musical ideas. Norman Teale will be the cement that will make this album possible.
Teale’s talent was unveiled in the course of the collaboration and it became gradually
obvious that his work with electronics and mixing was becoming an integral part of the group.
And so Sirjacq and Berthiaume gave him carte blanche. It is often said that jazz is about
innovation while paying due respect to tradition. Leaves and Snows is the work of three young
musicians eager to make their voices heard and to share their music — very
“actual” music, because it successfully brings together their diverse musical
identities (jazz, contemporary music, rock…) in a free improvisation context. The result:
music that addresses the listener, inviting him/her to widen his/her musical perception through
countless variations and colors, without ever weakening the coherence of its poetical approach.
Guitarist, improviser and composer Antoine Berthiaume is active on the jazz, “musique
actuelle” and contemporary music scenes. He performs live regularly at the helm of a
number of groups, including Les Chemins de la route, the Berthiaume-Donato-Tanguay Trio, and
L’Hexacorde. He will be performing at the next Montréal Jazz Festival. Pianist and
composer Quentin Sirjacq hails from France. His eclectic musical interests keep him active as
an improviser, a new music performer, and a composer of incidental music for film and dance.
American sound engineer, producer and composer Norman Teale is a graduate student in Mills
College’s “Electronic Music and Recording Media” program.

The three musicians involved in this trio have known each other for a long time,
but this CD is the result of a very new collaborative project. Recorded in a California studio,
this CD is also the singular result of spontaneous, real-time sound processing. Only a listen
will demonstrate the breadth of this sturdy musical exchange between three excellent musicians,
virtuosic with listening and improvisation, and a rogue recording engineer. Fred Frith has
invented his own way to improvise. Since his first solo guitar recording in 1974, he has been
perceived like a radical innovator of great talent. On the course of 30 years, he has been
working around the world with famous artists who are equally interested in similar creative
processes. Composer and saxophone player Jean Derome, and percussionnist Pierre Tanguay, are
two of these artists. Derome and Tanguay have played together in a myriad of projects since
1980. Based upon intuitive communication, the result of a long friendship, Jean Derome and
Pierre Tanguay continually establish a joyous ambience, blooming with precision and freedom. As
for the recording and mixing engineer, Myles Boisen, he shows himself to be both sensitive and
audacious. The meeting of Frith, Derome and Tanguay, three highly experienced musicians, with
Boisen produces nothing less than explosive psychedelic music. Real-time processing is a
fundamental asset here, as the new sound matter it brings forward have a radical effect on the
perception of music.

Twenty Quartet Inch Jacks is Tim Brady’s first release on the Ambiance
Magnétiques label and with this record Brady moves his work as both a composer and a
guitarist into new territory. Well-known for his innovative guitar work, this new CD combines a
major new work for 20 guitars with 2 works which make extensive use of sampling and computer
sound design. The title track is a work commissioned by the international théâtre
festival Les Coups de Théâtre. The commission was for a live performance work for 20
young guitarists lasting 45 minutes, but soon after Brady began composing the work it became
clear that the recorded version of the work was taking on a life of its own. Using no
electronics or sampling, and limiting himself to one guitar (a Steinberger GM4T), one fuzz box,
a volume pedal and a slide, Brady set out to create a work that explored of the fundamental
character of the guitar while creating a new sense of what a guitar ensemble could sound like.
Simple picking, big chords, noisey strings, bluesy string bends, open string pull-offs and
percussive attacks are the elements that combine to create striking musical textures and
evocative atmospheres. The work divides into 8 sections, but is meant to be played and listened
to as a single, continuos piece. The human voice (Brady’s on the CD) is also an integral
part of the sound world, as the theatrical nature of the work bridges the gap between pure
music and live performance. The human voice play an important role in the 2 other pieces on the
CD. Music Box Bell Curves (“Hello Paris!”) was commissioned by INA-GRM for the 2001
Radio-France festival PRESENCE in Paris. Using dozens of samples of small toy instruments,
which he has collected for 40 years, and samples from a “sonic party” (where these
instrumenta are played by his friends), Brady created a dramatic tape part that frames a
heavily processed live guitar part. The last work on the CD grew out of a commission by the
Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow. In 2001, Brady created an installation piece entitled
“public space/private music,” using samples of Sauchiehall Street and sounds from
the CCA building. After the installation the sound of these samples stuck in his mind and he
eventually re-worked the samples into a larger piece for guitar and tape. The simple guitar
part creates a sense of dialogue with the textures of the tape, moving to a rhythmic climax and
resolving to the quiet sounds of a workman whistling a hint of a tune as he sweeps the floor at
the CCA. The guitar returns, playing quiet harmonics as the sounds of the streets of Glasgow
bring the work to a close.

Unison Rituals is Tim Brady’s second release on Ambiances Magnétiques,
and features five highly original chamber works for saxophone and ensemble which point to the
increasing trend among new music ensembles to play music coming from a wide range of
performance traditions, bridging the gap between musique actuelle and contemporary chamber
works. Though Brady is perhaps best known for his virtuoso solo guitar works, as documented on
the 2002 Ambiance magnétique release Twenty Quartet Inch Jacks (Am 107), he is also a
chamber and orchestral composer of great imagaination and these five compostions show the scope
of his musical vision. The title track is a powerful work for saxophone quartet. Brady’s
at times obsessive use of unison melodic material (Unison Rituals) is a central element of this
work, given a stunning performance by the Quasar saxophone quartet. The work is also unique in
that the quartet actually plays a total of six saxophones during the course of the composition.
The opening of the piece uses 2 tenor saxophones, plus alto and baritone, the central section
uses the traditional soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, and the ending explores the colour of 2
soprano saxophones playing in unison against the deeper resonances the of alto and baritone.
The next three performance are by Bradyworks, the composer’s own chamber ensemble. Double
Helix is a quartet for saxophone (soprano, alto and baritone), combined with piano, percussion
and cello and features complex ensemble playing and interlocking rhythmic counterpoint. Two
Chords Less Than a Blues features solos for each of the performers on tenor saxophone, piano
and percussion. The work’s title refers to the fact that the piece explores two very
simple harmonic ideas - a 4-note cluster and the Cminor7 chord - spinning out elaborte textural
and melodic ideas from two very primary musical ideas. Escapement is a quartet with Brady
playing scordatura guitar. For this composition, the guitar is tuned to a differnet set of
notes than usual, giving the work a distinctive harmonic colour. The final work on the CD is
Sound Off, Brady’s 1983 outdoor performance piece for 100 wind instruments and 8 bass
drums, done here in a studio version, using multi-track overdubbing to create an ensemble of 45
winds and 3 bass drums. The work moves from complex textures to simple unison drones to
jazz-influenced ensemble counterpoint, creating a striking 12 and a half minute CD-version of
Brady’s original 45-minute outdoor extravaganza.

Composer and guitarist Tim Brady releases his most ambitious project ever with his
3rd Ambiances Magnétiques recording, a 46-minute symphony in 5 movements for solo electric
guitar, sampler, live electronics and a virtuoso chamber ensemble of 15 musicians. The work was
commissioned in 1997 by Canada's highly acclaimed contemporary music orchestra, the Nouvel
Ensemble Moderne, and was premiered in Montréal in October 2002, followed by performances
in New York and Marseille. The composition combines all of Brady's hallmark compositional ideas
into a single, rich, complex work of symphonic scope. The electric guitar is a central part of
the work, both through Brady's live performance and through the use of highly processed
electric guitar sounds triggered from a keyboard sampler. The orchestral writing varies from
delicate, soloistic lines though complex polyrhythmic counterpoint to dense, aggressive
rhythmic monoliths, all performed with remarkable precision and consummate musicianship by the
Nouvel Ensemble Moderne under conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt. The work was recorded in 24-bit
audio using multitrack techniques in order to give the most detailed possible sound to this
vibrant sonic tapestry. The recording reveals a new way to create contemporary chamber music:
combining the intensity of performance of 16 players on stage with the almost limitless
possibilites of sampling and live signal processing so as to allow the composer and the
listener an unparalleled freedom to imagine new forms of muscial expression. The CD also
inculdes a smaller chamber work for piano, guitar and electronics, entitled "Frame 1 -
Resonance", which explores these ideas about new music, guitars and technology on a more
intimate scale.

This chamber opera for voice, electric guitar, piano, percussion, saxophones,
string quartet and tape has been performed in Montréal (2003) and Toronto (2005). It tells
the life of the Canadian doctor and humanitarian Norman Bethune (1890-1939). Interweaving
extracts from Bethune’s own letters with poetry of the 1930s, Three Cities in the Life of
Dr. Norman Bethune explores the psychological and social elements that propelled Bethune to
leave his comfortable life in Montréal to fight with the Republican International Brigade
in Spain in 1936, and finally to join the Chinese Army in early 1938. The work follows Bethune
through three cities over the course of 5 years in one of the most turbulent eras of 20th
century history as he seeks to make sense of the world, to fight for what he believes in, and
to confront his own mortality.

While Brady’s three previous Ambiances Magnétiques releases were all
focused more on his work as a composer, GO [Guitar Obsession] brings the guitar back to centre
stage, making it clear why Guitar Player Magazine has named the Montréal-based composer
and musician “one of the 30 most important guitarists for the future of the
instrument”. The goal of the CD was to create a recording focused primarily on
Brady’s guitar playing and composing, rather than on complex studio technology.
Overdubbing, looping and computer processing were part of the production process, but they
always take a back seat to the sound and texture of a solo guitar performance. The first three
pieces on the CD are updated versions of pieces which Brady composed over 20 years ago. GO
[Guitar Obsession] is a fast, jazz-tinged loop piece; Yellow, Add Green is a deconstructed
blues with overdubs and While Softly Sounds is a beautiful solo guitar ballad. Frame 22: Switch
is a new work, for guitar and live electronics, moving from rock-tinged clusters to abstract
electronics to a haunting, melismatic melody. The work of four other composers is also an
important part of this recording, underscoring Brady’s strong commitment to developing
his vision of the electric guitar as a solo instrument in collaboration with other artists. Le
Chants des baleines by Jean-François Laporte and unplugged by Alexander Burton where both
commissioned by Brady, while Vampyr!, by French Tristan Murail, is a work dating from 1986. The
CD ends with the quiet, reflective work Bobby J, by British composer Laurence
Crane.

Tim Brady’s latest release on Ambiances Magnétiques is an extraordinary
collaboration between artists from across the world. On the CD SCAT, Brady’s rhythmic,
jazz-influenced North American chamber music is paired with the dynamic, take-no prisoners
virtuosity of Australia’s Topology ensemble, based in Brisbane. Brady and Topology began
collaborating in 1997, and toured Australia together in 1999, when the idea for this project
was born. The CD presents some of Brady’s most exciting and passionate chamber works, in
unrivaled performances by one of the finest new music ensemble of our time. SCAT (because we
all have voices and stories to tell) takes its title from the strongly jazz-influenced first
and third movements, and also from the unusual use of the musicians speaking voices as part of
the music in the second and third movements. In the final movement, the musicians have to tell
their life-story in 30 seconds, while playing their instrument as an accompaniement,
“scating” their personal histories. Lighting Field was composed for the 1999
Brady/Topology Australian tour, and consists of two movements. Darkness pairs the musicians
against an electroacoustic sampler part (playing processed electric guitar samples) to create a
quietly foreboding atmosphere. Illumination brings the ensemble together for one of the most
exciting rhythmic and dramatic movements that Brady has penned in recent years. Dark Matter
(Primal Pulse) was originally composed for the Philadelphia ensemble Relâche, and is a
small-scale concerto for viola, accompanied by 8 musicians. The work is quiet and introspective
in character, and is given a beautiful and detailed performance by Topology’s violist,
Bernard Hoey. Struck Twice By Lightning uses some of the same set of electric guitar samples as
Lightning Field, but creates a totally different musical universe with them. Struck Twice By
Lighting is about rhythm and articulation, about connecting the dark, visceral sound of the
viola to the chiming, clangerous, pulsing sound of sampled electric guitars.

Part two of a triptych which started with the album Le barman a tort de sourire
(AM 013), this second Bruire release continues the formal and poetic search already in a
process of elaboration. Strong eclecticism, mathematical impurity, extreme swarming, amateurish
silences, crushed bolts, streams of screeches and a myriad of nucleiproteins. Thirteen new
compositions tigthly linked by a poetic text form the core of what percussionist Michel F
Côté calls Les fleurs de Léo: immemoriality, bombs, necessity, a celestrial
ostrich, flowers, an imperishable friend, and death. Besides Michel F Côté, the other
Bruirors are: Jean Derome, Diane Labrosse, Claude Lamothe, Robert Marcel Lepage, René
Lussier, Ikue Mori and Claude St-Jean.

This variable formation here takes the form of a quintet of inventive musicians
and composers. The five musicians are determined to make this a pleasant experience for both
listeners and players. As a result, the sounds on “L’âme de
l’objet” (“The Object’s Soul”) show a mixture of diversions and

celebration of transition. This is where Bruire sits: in the middle of an overflowing desire of

Playing together since 1996, Bull and Heïkalo’s new offering is a work
of ripe and mature improvisation, often percussive, simultaneously introspective, questioning
and scorching, without compromise and artifice. Concentrés et amalgames features six
guitar (electric, prepared, acoustic and classical) duets plus five other tracks in which
Daniel Heïkalo and Arthur Bull’s guitars pair up with Heïkalo’s
percussion, including a prepared jazz drum kit. Both musicians wanted to push further their
rhythm experiments, textural work and real-time synergetic transformation of the material. The
result showcases a duo that has gained in maturity yet remains just as implacable and
uncompromising, refusing to bow to the latest sonic trends. This is direct, straightforward
music.

available on double CD. Fourteen songs based on poems by Yves Bonnefoy, which form a profound
ceremonial that goes to the heart of poetic investigation, the source of what we may call the
sacred. This is the poetry of essence, stripped of ornaments, a pivot between the ontological
and the mystical. Are dialoging two females voices, one man’s, three brass instruments,

With his faithful accomplices, and on the heals of his Chansons de Douve
(AM054CD), Pierre Cartier presents, a double cd, «Dis, Blaise…» chanson du
Transsibérien, who he sings from start to finish the very epic and very famous poem by
Blaise Cendrars. A composer, doublebass player and singer, Pierre Cartier is involved in many
different musics: gregorian chant and medieval music, baroque musique on period instruments,
symphonic and contemporary musics, jazz (notably Thelonious Monk) and improvised new musics.
All of these practices merge into his music upon the fortunate meeting of poetry and song.
Following the majestuous ceremonial of Chansons de Douve, with poems by Yves Bonnefoy, Cartier
now borrows the passionnate voice of Blaise Cendrars for his new project. “I was not yet
acquainted with the works of Blaise Cendrars when, flipping one day through the pages of an
anthology of French poetry, I first fell upon the Prose du Transsibérien. I think I must
have been deeply moved by this style of writing that resembled nothing I had encountered
before, and which actually seemed quite alien to me then (I was working on poems by Yves
Bonnefoy at the time); and yet, it touched me to the extent that I immediately felt the urge to
sing this text. I also knew nothing of the almost mythical character—the traveller and
adventurer—Cendrars had become, nor even of the man himself, whose voice resounded within
me, pure and true. Vision, desire, violence, gentleness: this poem simply spoke the essence of
suffering. […]” —Pierre Cartier

These compositions were inspired by numerous voyages in the French Alps and the

having met the dialectologist Hubert Bessat who co-authored, with Claudette Germi, Les mots de

Estaoubio… is taken from an inscription found on a house in Saint-Girons (Ariège,

or actuelle music, will walk away the winner… Flat fourgonnette (that can be very rougly
translated as “Flat pick-up truck (Mescal free style)”), is Michel F.
Côté’s attempt at “american” music: hybrid, unpredictable and
funny. “This is an album of American music. There are cowboys and horses, a saloon and
its pretty manageress, an Italian immigrant, a love story, a ride through the desert, and even
an Indian or two. Nothing experimental, 100% animal. Flat Fourgonnette is like an old
story-telling buffalo; his imprecise recollections are endearing. I like hesitations and
mistakes - they are more poetic, more revealing than the olympic, boring virtuosity we are used
to. Yee-Haw!!!” —M.F.C. To produce the album, he brought together a number of

(juste) Claudette is acid, coarse and rough. It has swing and bite. It’s a
fast and (not-so-always) willing quartet. They play loud, they hit hard, and they smell strong
(but not all the time). Claudette can also be tender, judging from the two ballads included (a
Vincent Gallo cover and an approximate reading of a piece by Morton Feldman). So, it’s
also a record for the girls (and not only Claudette). Alexandre St-Onge on doublebass, Bernard
Falaise on electric guitar, Jesse Levine on electric organ, Michel F Côté on drums
and pocket trumpet (Gordon Allen will be the live trumpeter). That’s it for the manpower.
Style-wise, Claudette is not easily labeled. As usual, I’m avoiding sure-fire categories.
This is nameless music. The musicians and the band have names, but the music they create
doesn’t. There, now figure it all out! All right, in the name of kindness and to reassure
those who absolutely need markers, we’ll pretend that (juste) Claudette is at the
crossroads of Bruire, Klaxon Gueule and Flat Fourgonnette. Although, it would be pure luck if
it happened to be true. Let’s say that (juste) Claudette is resistance to
repetition.

Michel F Côté, better known as leader of Bruire, and Diane Labrosse, as
active member of the group Justine, present Duo Déconstructiviste. Construct and
deconstruct, like matching the pieces from different meccano sets… Deconstruct, then
construct. Based on improvisation, interactive listening and radical exploration, their music
uses short phrases as part of the writing process, quoting some of their favorite artists and
friends. They travel happily (and freely) frow new musical currents to contemporary writings
and some more abstract ambiances. Using a hybrid set-up of acoustic and electronic percussions
wired to a portable DAT recorder, Côté is both rhythmical and melodic, colourful and
eloquent. Labrosse, performing on digital sampler keyboard brings out melodies only to break
them with her usual sense of humour and a certain notion of drama. Duo Déconstructiviste
was created at The Banff Centre for the Arts in the fall of 93.

120th album released by Ambiances Magnétiques, "Carré de sable"
(Sandbox) introduces Guido Del Fabbro as a solo artist. It is a mixture of sound environments
and instrumental pieces combining composition and multitracked improvisation. A suite of 19
short pieces in which rhythms mechanically come to life through the progressive accretion of
electronic and acoustic elements. Noises, sounds and world music-influenced melodies
intermingle. A kind of magic taking us to the heart of Guido Del Fabbro’s wild universe.
On this album, the young composer and musician reveals himself as a promising
jack-of-all-trades. In addition to his faithful violin, Del Fabbro plays a wide array of
instruments and objects, including guitar (acoustic, electric, prepared), mandolin, banjo,
recorder, living-room organ, turntable, and coffeepot. What was the young musician’s
philosophy for this album? "To play with very simple elements, just like a child in a sandbox."
A violinist since the age of four, Guido Del Fabbro first showed an interest in composition and
improvisation in 1990 - he was only ten years old. A member of the Fanfare Pourpour and the
group Rouge Ciel, he also appears on the DAME production "Sang 9" with the group Concorde
Crash. Only 23 years old, this composer already has an impressive track record and is promised
to a brilliant career. Highly recommended.

Agrégats presents 13 pieces orchestrated for acoustic instruments, with a
touch of electronics, performed by a shapeshifting ensemble directed by Guido Del Fabbro. A
tentet at its largest, this group brings together individuals from various generations and
musical backgrounds, all highly talented performers and improvisers. Flautist Jean Derome and
Pierre Tanguay on percussion and objects are pillars of the local “musique
actuelle” scene and renown jazzmen; accordionist Luzio Altobelli, clarinetist
Pierre-Emmanuel Poizat (both from Manouche and Fanfare Pourpour), and clarinetist Guillaume
Bourque (Manouche, Lara), are well versed in world and pop music; trombonist Nicolas Therrien
plays jazz and Brazilian music; Philippe Brault on doublebass works in pop music; cellist
Sheila Hannigan plays tango, classical music, and pop; drummer Stefan Schneider (Bell
Orchestre, Iks, Jorane) does modern jazz and post-rock. The ensemble is rounded up by Guido Del
Fabbro on violin and electronics. The music, mirroring the group’s lineup, combines
several musical currents, without ever forcing them into the melting pot. Guido Del
Fabbro’s work as an arranger focuses on the possible combinations of tones highlighting
the melodic aspect of the repertoire, which has a foot in traditional folk music and another in
avant-rock territory. An intense work performed by an unmatched ensemble, whose conductor will
definitely surprise you.

The two musicians met in 1996 at one of Butch Morris’s
“conductions” and first played together, as a duo, in 1999. They have also played
in a quartet with Gunter Müller and Jacques Widmer as well as with the group Chamaeleo
Vulgaris, and they have appeared at the Visages des Nouvelles Musiques Suisses Festival in
Marseille. These recordings are from 2001. “The playing of these two vital Swiss
adventurers takes place in the wake of European research into improvisation over the last
twenty years. Their duo playing reveals, beyond their qualities as instrumentalists, an
understanding of how to position themselves, how to decode, and when to communicate—and
when not to communicate—instantaneously. Uniting through a fine attentiveness to the
other, and forming a unit that is thick, fleshy and powerful, but always alert, they let
themselves be guided by the flow they create by provoking the instant reactions out of which
are born many changes of atmosphere, tone, theme, and dynamic.” Théo Jarrier, Peace

Does Georges Perec ring a bell? Born in Paris in 1936, died too young in 1982, he
was a novelist, film-maker, playwright, essayist, and a member of Oulipo. Now, do you think you
know Jean Derome? A composer and improvisational wizard, a magnanimous individual, saxophonist
and multi-instrumentalist, he is also a member of countless music ensembles. Spare time? Jean
devotes a good part of it to literature. Now the twain shall meet. Derome’s work for this
album is inspired by the numerous musical references in Perec’s book «Je me
souviens» (I remember). A radio tribute for 13 musicians, the 26 pieces contained herein
form a potent retrospective of French popular music of the 50’s and 60’s. From Ray
Ventura to Henri Salvador; congas, vibraphone, tapdance and yéyé… Unbelievable.
As a bonus, we have included “Tu r’luttes,” 17 games for 12 improvisers,
played by the Ensembles Flammèches (Québec) and White Wine Dark Grapes (Belgium). An

dance troupe and their production “The Beast Within,” directed by Ginette Laurin.
Here, Derome treats us with an exploration of animalistic qualities, whether in violence,
sensuality or spirituality. The Beast Within is a fresh, rhythmic album full of changing
textures, evoking the weaving of fabrics, suspiration, spaces of spectacle such as the cabaret,
the circus and our urban environment… Derome’s music dynamically intermingles
improvisation and composition while employing, almost exclusively, acoustic instruments for
their organic and stratingly real presence. La Bête, the Beast Within; music which

After composing for dance (La Bête / The Beast Within) and theatre (3
musiques pour UBU), the ever-prolific Jean Derome has now made music for cinema with his album
“Strand, Under the Dark Cloth.”Composed in 1988 as the soundtrack to the eponymous
film by John Walker, this soundtrack is conceived as a “suite in black and white,”
gradually building and developing into a portrait of a photographer, a pioneer and a great
artist of the twentieth century: Paul Strand. The music for “Strand, Under the Dark
Cloth” is a passacaglia of sorts, whose main melody represents the elegance, grace and
beauty of Paul Strand’s work. Orchestrated for a large ensemble of strings, winds,
percussions and voice, this album bears witness to the impressive range of Jean Derome’s
compositional work, an oeuvre resolutely of its time which always manages to thrill us and keep
us surprised.

In 1992, Jean Derome received the Freddie Stone Award for his artistic integrity
and his contribution to canadian new music for the last twenty years. A composer, interpreter,
multi-instrumentalist and improviser, he can be found wherever things are happening in
Montréal. He is a regular member of a number of groups, mainly Évidence, Le
trésor de la langue, Bruire, Les Granules (all on Ambiances Magnétiques) as well as
Lars Hollmer’s Looping Home Orchestra Live 1992-93; he has also created and recorded
Confitures de gagaku (released on Victo label). Not content of this already crowded track
record, we are here presented “Carnets de voyage,” the first recording of Jean
Derome et les Dangereux Zhoms, recorded in concerts around Montréal in March 94. This
electrifying CD bears witness to the extraordinary creativity of the Dangereux Zhoms and the
amounts of pleasure these excellent musicians have playing together. The 11 pieces comprising
Carnets de Voyage were all written by Jean Derome, in trains and hotel rooms, airports and
planes, during various Canadian and European tours with Fred Frith, René Lussier and Lars
Hollmer.

Navré is a sequel to Carnets de voyage, the previous Dangereux Zhoms outing,
released in November 1994. It once again features a collection of pieces composed by Jean
Derome, all written on his spiral notebooks while on tour. And as with any travel, the music
found herein is full of surprises, rapid and unexpected changes, quick turns, movement, life!
Each of the 8 pieces of this album takes us to a different universe, leads us quickly from one
place, one atmosphere, one emotion to another, all with remarkable vivaciousness. «Les
Dangereux Zhoms is an explosive mix of 6 very different musical personalities, 6 colours which
complete each other in a truly vivid and invigorating way. If I myself had Lussier’s
precision, Cartier’s intensity, Tanguay’s vitality, Dostaler’s concentration
and Walsh’s wit, I would not have had to create this group. Each interpreter takes an
active part in the composition by modifying the phrasing, the dynamics, the shape and the
choice of the improvisation at any moment. Each piece becomes a game. As in chess, it obeys
specific rules and is constantly renewing itself. My job as composer and director is to create
a common ground favourable to the birth of something very rare and very beautiful, namely,
music. To all interested parties, the group is blossoming!» —Jean
Derome.

was also born from Jean Derome’s travel diary, a personal journal made of musical
feelings taken on table corners during his many tours. This repertoire-territory is
investigated by 6 well seasoned Dangereux Zhoms, who are not afraid of getting lost or found
because they are relentless inventors and masters of time: resourceful, crazy, subversive,
these water diviners, hunters, researchers and finders and most of all wonderful musicians

DZ’s new album To Continue (2007) takes the group’s unique features
further: cohabitation between layers of scored music and free improvisation, polyphony,
polyrhythms, irregular meters, complex forms, rich harmonies and polymodalism. To Continue
presents eight new Derome originals, all given top-rate performances bursting with creativity,
tightness, drive, and fire. The Dangereux Zhoms are currently reaffirming their jazz roots,
while maintaining a radical discipline of collective improvisation and sonic experimentation.
The Dangereux Zhoms are balancing imagination, humor, and physical playing. Their music is full
of intense improvised passages and catchy tunes. It makes the music completely unclassifiable,
which agrees very well with the group’s leader. As Derome said to Coda in 1995:
“I’m playing music. Not jazz or any other genre per se; only music, period.”
In Exclaim!, Richard Moule described the musicians in this ensemble as “adventurous
players who gracefully jump, straddle, and zigzag along every corner of the musical realm.
Avant-rock, jazz styles ranging from Free to Bop and Cool, contemporary academic music, and
funk only serve as springboards for their impish and creative excursions.” Jean Derome et
les Dangereux Zhoms was formed in 1992 for the opening concert of the 10th Festival
international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV). The group gave many concerts in
Montréal and Québec, and in major Canadian cities, in addition to appearing at around
10 international festivals (Germany, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, USA). In 2001, Jean
Derome was awarded an Opus Award from the Conseil québécois de la musique, for his
international career, both on record and on stage. The ensemble’s repertoire includes
over 60 Derome originals, 25 of which appear on their first three albums: Carnets de voyage
(1994), Navré (1995), and Torticolis (1998).

The compact disc combines for the first time twenty-two poems written and
interpreted by Patrice Desbiens, with music improvised by Jean Derome, Guillaume Dostaler,
René Lussier and Pierre Tanguay and recorded on March 18th 1996. “Patrice Desbiens
et les Moyens du Bord” has been produced and directed by veteran guitar explorer
René Lussier who then declared: “And then it struck me—right out of my chair!
As I struggled back up I realized: Patrice is an incredible poet. To record him while reciting
his poems became essential.” All the poems are taken out of different books written
between 1974 and 1995. The texts are featured integrally, housed in an original spiral-bound
book designed by Paul Grégoire.

First album released by André Duchesne after the Conventum adventure, Le
temps des bombes (1984) is a multifaceted collection of songs illuminated by modern
counterpoints with a progressive rock edge. An invitation to hear Duchesne’s fantastic
and whimsical poetry, supported by an ensemble of excellent musicians. Caustic, satirical
texts, poems dedicated to Van Gogh, fabulous allegories told by Duchesne’s warm and
engaging voice, and accompanied by well-articulated strings and inventive persussion. An album
revealing the strength and the breadth of this composer’s work. A must from Ambiances

André Duchesne has created this music for the film Le Royaume ou
l’Asile, directed by Jean and Serge Gagné. The soundtrack itself creates distinct
images through a flow of illusions of many different sound colours. Music, sound effects,
voices and songs, this album suggests a voyage celebrating the beauty of the Saguenay’s
fiords and brings us in s world of illusions. Duchesne’s music has been coloring and
haunting the soudtracks of many Quebec movie directors: André Forcier, Fernand
Bélanger and the Gagné brothers. Electric jack-of-all trades, iconoclastic musician,

The classical guitar slept in its old case. The one which has followed me in all
my solitary travels. You see outside but you look inside. Lunatic music, at random. Home music,
pensive and meditative. A reflection on life. A moment in a life when what is fundamental
questions our relationship with music. A nervous arrival at the studio. I could have recorded
all this at home with the dripping faucet and the fridge. Calm, magic of the alcove. And now,
the territory of the guitar reveals itself, the fingers tracing Their paths along the strings.
The guitar speaks to you, unravels its notes like the reflections of a companion as it walks,
in its infinite variations. Thought takes flight and leaves the space. It pretends to be an
orchestra, throwing its notes upon the lakes. This chord which slips between the fingers like a
habit. Someone comes into the room for a moment. She speaks to you of Spain, of elsewhere. In
the puddle, the world looks backwards. The heart hurts. And these fingernails which scratch the
strings. The motifs interlace, In the water of the microphones. That’s it, it’s
begun to sing. Listen now! It’s speaking to you. André Duchesne, April

André Duchesne's Cordes à danser is an impressionistic rock suite of 12
instrumental pictures inspired by the landscapes among which he spent his childhood, in the
industrial atmosphere of the Saguenay. One could see the relationship between quartet and trio
as the reunion of a triangle and a square. One moves forward like an arrow or a ship, while the
other develops and builds. Composition and improvisation. Dragged by three horses, the buggy
rolls on through landscapes of bauxite lakes, factory chimneys and energy powers. You look at
the sky and think it's gonna rain cats and dogs.

The Ensemble Pierre Labbé’s first album for the label Ambiances
Magnétiques,Risque et pendule offers a fusion of avant-garde jazz and
contemporary/classical music. Featuring some of the most dynamic and versatile musicians from
those fields, the Ensemble Pierre Labbé delivers a first-rate musical performance. The
ensemble’s process is based on a search for balance between written music and
improvisation. Their compositional concern steps away from the developments found in
conventional jazz (theme-chorus-theme) to focus instead on a cohabitation between composition
and improvisation. Organic and sensitive, the album Risque et pendule presents nine pieces that
make judicious leaps across stylistic boundaries. You will pick up the warmth of jazz, the
refinement of contemporary music, the energy of rock and the wildness of musique actuelle.

Clic consists in a group of six pieces written in the studio. The musicians never
actually performed this music together; they recorded their overdubs one by one. Most of the
material had been composed beforehand, but part of it came to be in reaction to what the
musicians were playing, occasionally through improvisation. With Clic, what I wanted to do was
to experiment with unusual metronomic applications. For instance, the ever-changing tempo in
Yéti; the superimposed tempi in Mule, Thon, Neuf, and Fête; the tempo changes in
Neuf, etc. Also, Watt and Clic feature two-part canons, each with its own tempo. Most of this
music would be near impossible to perform live. It was written specifically for a record. I
like the idea that the record is to cinema what the concert is to theatre. Filming a play
rarely makes a good movie. In the course of this record, you will find (more or less obvious)
tributes to and winks at the following musicians: Aksak Maboul, Anthony Braxton, Captain
Beefheart, Franco Donatoni, Les Granules, Conlon Nancarrow, Igor Stravinsky, and Robert Wyatt.

Fenaison is a group committed to the making of new music that is texturally
driven, improvised, exploratory, and boundary crossing. Performing with intuition, ingenuity,

”Listening to Fenaison reminds me why I enjoy improvisation. They make music that is
passionate, mysterious, and full of contradictions - careful and abandoned, melodic and noisy,
peaceful and edgy, logical and surprising - music that doesn’t make sense. In other

On this disc soloist Lori Freedman presents thirteen new improvised pieces for
soprano and bass clarinets that were recorded at Radio-Canada’s Studio 12 in the spring
of 2002. Imposing an unbridled rhythm on her clarinets, this alchemist-musician invites us into
a surprising world in which the music is allowed to develop on its own, vibrant and
captivating. Propelling, in the fervour of the moment—a very exact moment—music
that abounds in textures both complex and refined, she constructs a non-linear sound universe
that is very close to the bizarre revelations travelled in dreams, furiously original, studded
with frenzied, fleeting flashes. Born in Toronto, Lori Freedman followed the twin paths of
contemporary written and improvised music. A virtuoso on both the soprano and bass clarinets
and a performer of more than 40 works composed especially for her, Lori Freedman is renowned as
one of Canada’s most creative musicians. She received a Freddie Stone Award in 1998 for
her contribution to the advancement of creative music, and her first solo disc, Huskless
(Artifact 020), earned her a nomination at the Prairie Music Awards in 2000 for Best Classical
Recording. She has composed works for soloists and for ensembles, for dance, for theatre, and
for film. Lori Freedman has taken up a post as composer in residence at the Banff
Centre’s Leighton Studios for the Arts in the autumn of 2002, after which she will
present a series of concerts on a North America tour.

For me, the trio is the ideal formation for improvising music. In general, even
numbers imply something known, where odd numbers feel open. “2” can create corners
that “3” can melt down, transform. “3” is complete, continuous and
infinite. Dynamics move stasis. It’s playful. For 3 consecutive nights I brought together
in concert 3 distinct trios, with 6 other Montréal musicians each chosen for their fertile
imagination and identifiable musical style. This disc is made primarily from these live
encounters recorded during the heatwave of June 2, 3 and 4, 2005 at the Bistro Le Va-et-Vient
in Montréal. Certain musical passages were later re-worked in the studio to
“compose” other sonic and textural elements. This latter development was made
possible thanks to the magical and mega-inspirational mind of Michel F

This meeting with Fred Frith was a jubilation from start to finish. One of those
precious moments where trust rules and energy flows. We had never played together, but it was
bound to happen. The initial impetus for this duo came from a Carte blanche offered by Pierre
Dumont of the Festival des musiques de création in Saguenay. To me, it seemed appropriate
to honor that Carte blanche with this project with Fred. And as long as we were dragging him to
Québec, we had to take the opportunity to present this “rare” duo in
Montréal, at La Sala Rossa. This CD is not the faithful reproduction of one of these
concerts, but a collage featuring highlights from both evenings. Fred and I have mixed and
edited separately, from the live recordings. I have worked from a superimposition of the two
concerts, while Fred worked on stripping them down. Since I did not have the distance necessary
to make the final editing decisions, I asked DAME label’s honcho (and my dear friend and
super-colleague) Joane Hétu to bring the CD project to a close. So here you have a work of
excellent audio quality that faithfully communicates the energy and telepathy Fred and I

What more can be said of Fred Frith? As with all musicians and composers of his
caliber, he is a relentless inventor. His quartet, formed in 1990, highlights one of the
quintessential instruments of «musique actuelle», the electric guitar. Its first CD
on Ambiances Magnétiques, Ayaya Moses features works by Claude Vivier and Olivia Bignardi,
as well as original compositions by each member, scored for the quartet. Ten journeys through
contrasting topographies, whether rigorously scored or spontaneously dreamed up, exploiting the
resources of the electric guitar to the fullest imaginable degree, and featuring the kind of
ensemble precision and dynamics usually associated with string quartets and chamber ensembles -
but with unrelenting rock energy!

Anyone who’s attended a concert of the FFGQ can attest to the qualities that
make them such a unique institution, one that’s far beyond mere virtuosity. Individually
and collectively, the FFGQ displays innumerable qualities of concentration, versatility,
unpredictability, as well as a disarming sense of humour which may erupt at any moment. What
better way to celebrate the group’s tenth year of existence than this collection of live
recordings from their 1997 European tour, a breathless narrative that unfolds with relentless
drive and charm while touching down at a typically wide range of destinations.

A trio formed of Rainer Wiens, John Heward, and Malcolm Goldstein on guitar,
drums, and violin respectively, now present their first album “Chants cachés.”
This is to be filed under uncharted improvised music. “These three musicians have played
together often and it shows. There is a real complicity at work in this free music, a
friendship beneath this sonic alchemy. A complete symbiosis between the three musicians
improvising rigorous and authentic free, moulding sound not only in its discursive, linguistic,
and conversational elements but also in the very core of its matter. These are not three
soloists exhibiting their speed or their technical know-how. On the contrary, this dense and
expressionist music is collective above all else, radical, demanding both for the musicians and
the audience. Music about giving in which everyone must contribute something.”

Les Granules: “We’ve been working together, composing, interpreting
and improvising since 1978. We impose no stylistic restrictions on ourselves and believe that
beauty can be had in the incongruous coming together of stories and ideas. Our collaboration
has always been based on the work of the man-orchestra, the integration of sound tapes, an
almost cinematographic vision of musical series and a broad stylistic field extending from
improvised music to folk, and from contemporary music to rock. Au royaume du silencieux is our
third album. The pieces have been recorded in real time with no overdubbing. The resulting
sound is rougher than our earlier records. Each composed or improvised piece was studiously
restructured through collage. Slight differences in pulse, tuning as well as subtle shifts in
tempo or from one recording to another, have been left evident rather than hidden thus creating
a mosaic or quilted effect.”

Ambiances Magnétiques presents the debut album from sculptor, musician and
performing artist Paul Grégoire. "Douleur Sourde" is a CD of songs. The music is slow and
melodious, and often borrowed from a known repertoire. Lyrics are unique, occasionally
anecdotal, always sensitive, and present a certain level of reflection on social matters and a
touch of humor, while remaining dark. Paul’s backing musicians are: Drae Rival and his
highly unique guitar playing, with unusual and unexpected chords; drummer Jonas Slowenski,
whose philosophical slowness could not better match the spirit of the album; René Lussier,
who plays all the instruments in two songs: he handles guitar, bass, percussion, feet, and
whistling; Paul Hubert’s vitality, his extremely energetic guitar playing; Fred
Boudreault who, with his doublebass, contributes to the gloomy, rumbling side of the music;
Jean Derome, responsible for the beautiful and delicate arrangements and also one gripping
solo; and finally Michel F Côté, who plays drums on almost every song, but who also
coordinated the project and without whom this album would not exist today. A multidisciplinary
artist, Paul Grégoire has been active in the fields of sculpture, music, literature, and
performance since 1970. Naturally, he took care of the album sleeve, which includes a booklet
with lyrics and illustrations for all the songs. "I wanted to leave my mark, but like with
certain exhibitions or performances put together to sum things up, I needed to complete a cycle
and summarize a few years of pleasure and work in music." -Paul Grégoire. Douleur sourde
is a unique, moving, unclassifiable album.

On the eve of the 114th anniversary of the hanging of the Franco-Manitoban
Métis leader Louis Riel in Regina on 16 November 1885, double bass player Normand
Guilbeault is launching his 2-CD work entitled Riel, Plaidoyer musical / Musical Plea, recorded
in February at the Lion d’Or in Montréal. The result of four years of diligent
research, Riel, Plaidoyer musical / Musical Plea sheds new light on one of the little-known and
most controversial episodes in Canadian history. Accompanying the discs is a 72-page booklet
that includes archival photographs of the period and texts, in English and French, by Louis
Riel, Gabriel Dumont, commander of the Métis forces, Louis Schmidt, principal secretary to
Riel, and Père André, who ministered to Riel during his last night. With Riel,
Plaidoyer musical / Musical Plea, Normand Guilbeault and his large group of outstanding
musicians invite us to discover a historical and musical epic set on the Manitoban frontier.
Original compositions, native chants, gigues, reels, songs of the period, military marches and
improvisation are woven to create the fabric of a vibrant work that combines politics and
poetry. Music, chants, political texts and poetry surprise, delight and assert without
compromise.

Joane Hétu signs here a first CD of her own music and texts, Castor et
compagnie, with longtime accomplices Jean Derome, Diane Labrosse and Pierre Tanguay. Castor et
compagnie is a cycle of songs for lovers of senses, sense and sounds, noise and lyricism,
pleasure and erotism. The lyrics were inspired by the vocabulary of Hindu erotic books, Arabic
love games and a few saucy songs. The music is daring and energetic, made of turbulent
atmospheres, evocative lullabies and even love songs. Joane Hétu is best known as a member
of early AM female supergroups Justine, Wondeur Brass and Les Poules. An inventive composer,
improviser and saxophonist, Hétu has always been exploring and developping a musical style
of her own: a harsh, guttural voice flirting with a modern lyricism tainted with original
textures, strident sounds and atonal harmonies. She is at her best with this difficult, yet
sensuous expression of poetry that has the intelligence of its music.

A recent release from the ever-prolific Joane Hétu, the work "Musique
d’hiver" (winter music) pays tribute to the frisky Nordic winds, the blinding luminosity
of winter, the February moon, and the craziness of March, in order to communicate the emotional
effervescence of winter. A 66-minute piece in four scenes (La chute, On se les gèle,
Lumière de février, J’ai perdu le nord), "Musique d’hiver" is arranged
for acoustic instruments — piano, voice, flutes, alto sax, accordion, percussion —
and electric instruments — synthesizer, sampler, and tape manipulation. It is an
invitation to a music ritual for a season of frost and high winds
